There are several ways to fish for bass, many tackle manufacturers to choose from, and literally thousands of baits offered. There are general rules of thumb and proven dos-and-don'ts, but overall if it works, it must be right. There are so many factors that play a part in bass fishing that it is impossible to answer this question in one article. So I'll start with just the very basics:
B = BASS clubs: Join your local bass club, and ask questions. Many of these guys are willing to share their knowledge.
A = ASK more questions: To fish for bass you need to "know" whats happening. Most of us professional anglers do our "homework",we utilize the internet prior to the tournaments and on a regular basis. A great place to start is on the #1 site for questions and answers online.....
Ask.com. S = SEEK out bass fishing SHOWS. Pay close attention to what they are doing. Some good shows to watch are Angler's West, Hank Parker, and Bill Dance.
S = SEEK out bass fishing websites, blogs, forums, magazines, and newspapers.
F = Use a
FRESHWATER bass
FISHING pole...I prefer
Daiwa due to the extreme sensitivity of feeling in their designs. Because of the extra sensitivity you can feel what your lure is doing and be able to detect more bites. This equals more fish, giving you the advantage plus more of a chance to catch a MONSTER BASS!
I = IMITATE the bait: Tricking the bass into eating is the key. Try to imitate the food source by looks and movement. Bass will tend to eat most anything available to them, crayfish, shad, herring, snakes, lizards, frogs, birds, baby ducks, worms, and other fish. They will even eat their own kind. Play with the retrieve of your bait, in conjunction with pauses: burning it, medium retrieve, slow, slow with a pause, etc.
S = SCENT: Use your favorite scent on your artificial lures, to mask human scent and make your lure more desirable. Some of my favorites are Smelly Jelly and Hot Sauce.
H = HONE your casting skills. At home practice casting into a bucket. When mastering this, move to a smaller one, until you are able to cast into a small cup repeatedly.
I = INSPECT the shallows. Look for rocks, drop offs, brush, and any other structure. Bass can always be found near or on structure. They will use this as ambush points for their prey.
N =NEVER give up! What makes bass so interesting is that they are a constant challenge. Although there are general patterns that bass follow, they don't always follow the "norm". It is a puzzle each time, and it is your duty to figure out where to find them and what artificial lure they want.
G = GO fishing with a bass guide and ask a lot of questions, the information you will learn is invaluable. Practice, practice, practice, and never give up practicing!
